Description:This collection of 24 poems includes “Dugout Canoe,” “The Deer,” “The Sun,” “Orchid Cactus Blooming at Night,” “Safe and Secure,” and “Mazu Ceremony.” In the “Postscript” Ye Di praised this collection: “In the lyrical charm there gestates the strong scent of the native soil….these poems hasten the awakening of the soul and prompt a call to purification.” Among these poems “The Deer” has its origins in the author’s experience during the Pacific War. The memory of seeing deer frequently slaughtered for food in the jungles of Southeast Asia and that of his father’s struggles as he lay dying both had an influence on him. In the poem the poet writes about the expectations of peace and tranquility surrounding “death,” and moves the deer from the jungles of Southeast Asia to Taiwan’s Jade Mountain, providing local imagery. It is one of the poet’s most representative poems.
