Description:This work is the preface by Zhu Xining to Xiao Bai’s essay collection Overtones published in June 1974. At the end it is signed “jia yin xiao man．Jingmei.” “Jia yin” stands for 1974 (in the traditional “Heavenly stem and branch” dating system) and xiao man (one of the 24 solar terms) that year was May 21. When Xiao wrote Overtones he had already retired from the military and was living in Jingmei/Saints’ Alp ［仙跡岩座落於台北市文山區，該地區舊稱「景美」where in the evening “it was quiet like the water of a lake, and to sit there under the evening sky was like sitting on the lakeshore.” Zhu Xining’s essays are very poetic in tone. Zhu lived on the far side of Saints’ Alp, which was part of “Jingmei,” and his “Preface” was infused with a Zen spirit, both it and the writing very much reflecting each other.

其他說明:本文係朱西甯為蕭白1974年6月出版之散文集《弦外集》所寫的序，文末署字「甲寅小滿．景美」，「甲寅」即1974年；「小滿」為廿四節氣之一，當年「小滿」為5月21日。寫作《弦外集》的當時，蕭白已自軍旅退休，居住在景美夜晚「靜悄悄如一湖水，坐在夜下就像坐在湖岸」的仙跡岩下，其散文帶著濃濃詩意；朱西甯則住仙跡岩另一邊，同屬「景美」，他的「序」則充滿禪味，兩者相互輝映。
