Description:The “inaugural publication statement” of Spring Breeze clearly states “as for content, we adhere to the fine tradition of realism and its spirit of resistance, boldly marching forward” and “as for direction, we continue the ideas of the common people, of being active, of criticizing injustice, of embracing Taiwan and of participating in reform, all of which have come into being in the wake of the development of the New Literature.” They opposed excessive Westernization and “horizontal transplantation” believing that “poetry means work, means life.” This was a poetry publication that was critical, that was ready to protest, to do combat, and that published both poetry and polemics. Aside from promoting the “Prison Poems Album,” this issue actually published “prison poems” by the Turkish poet Nazim Hikment, China’s Dai Wangshu, and Yang Hua from the Japanese Occupation Period, as well as poems from the Paiwan poet Mulaneng’s Mountain Man Anthology, an introduction to Chinese poets of the 1930s, a book review by Xu Nancun, “The Irony of Irony—Review of Thoughts on Third-world Literature,” poems by Taiwanese poets Zhong Qiao, Zhan Che, Lin Fan, Lin Shuangbu, Ye Di, and Yang Du. There was also an interview with Xu Daran on the topic of “The Divergent Roads of Literature and Politics,” which discussed the dialectic relationship between “literature” and “politics.”
