本刊由隸屬於台灣省政府教育廳的「兒童讀物編輯小組」負責規劃，乃是專為小學階段的孩童所創辦的綜合性讀物。創刊號封面由著名的兒童插畫家趙國宗設計，首頁有時任台灣省政府教育廳廳長林清江所撰寫之發刊辭，敘明其編輯主旨為「知識的、生活的、趣味的」，希望藉此精神食糧，培養孩子的想像力，並美化其心靈。內容有童話故事、白話古典文選、環境與生活、作文教室、漫畫、寵物飼養、益智遊戲、魔術等單元，題材豐富，印刷精美，不僅是陪伴無數兒童成長的重要刊物，更為許多本土作家開鑿一片別有洞天的筆耕園地，對鄉土文學的發展亦有所助益。可惜在精省兩三年後，由於預算不足，教育部因之裁撤「兒童讀物編輯小組」，也由此導致《兒童的雜誌》停刊的命運；截至2002年12月為止，總計發行190期。

This publication was planned by the Editing Division of Children's Readings, which was subordinate to the Taiwan Provincial Government's Department of Education. It consists of diverse reading materials specially created for elementary school aged children. The cover of the first edition was designed by renowned children's illustrator Zhao Guozong. The first page bears an opening statement by the Department of Education's then-director Lin Qingjiang, giving a detailed account of their guiding editing principle—"Of knowledge, of life, of fun"—aiming to foster children's imaginations and brighten their minds through such spiritual nourishment. The content includes sections on children's stories, selections from classics in simple language, lessons on environment and life, a composition classroom, comics, lessons on raising pets, educational games, and magic. It is rich with material and its printing is refined in quality. It was not merely an important periodical that has been a companion to countless children; it was also a garden spot for numerous local writers to carve out their writing niche; overall, it was of great benefit to the development of native literature. Sadly, a few years after budget cuts, the Ministry of Education dissolved the Editing Division of Children's Readings, and this led to Children's Magazine ceasing publication. By December 2002, a total of 190 issued had been published.
