Description:This poetry collection published by Yoshitoshi Abe’s Wakagi Shobō was planned out by his colleagues in the Bamboo Hat Poetry Society—Chen Qianwu, Zhang Bing, Lin Hengtai, Jin Lian, Bai Qiu, Zhao Tianyi, and Li Kuixian. The collection contains 108 poems by 64 modern poets, including Huang Lingzhi, Jin Lian, and Bai Qiu.
The sub-title of the book is “A Collection of Modern Poems from the Republic of China” and it succinctly conveys the diverse and broad nature and tone of the material. The work of colleagues from all Taiwan modern poetry societies of the day is included, poetry societies such as Modern Poetry, Blue Star, South and North Flute, Genesis, Vineyard, and the Bamboo Hat poetry societies.
Another very significant thing about the publication of this book is that as a result of his editing and selecting poems for inclusion, the poet Chen Qianwu proposed the “two roots” thesis of modern Taiwan poetry in his afterword: “The History of Modern Taiwan Poetry and Poets.” Chen believed in talking about the roots of modern Taiwan poetry, in addition to the China “Modern School” originating with Ju Xuan and Tan Zihao, generally regarded as the source behind the immediate flowering of the “roots,” one couldn’t ignore “another source,” the nativist root that had succeeded the Taiwan poets of the Japanese colonial period inheriting their spirit. This viewpoint not only established the subsequent nativist discourse of the “Bamboo Hat Poetry Society,” it also offered a basis for explaining the emergence in the mid-70s of Taiwanese literature from Japanese Occupation Period.

2.這本由日本安倍玲以的若樹書房出版的日文詩集，乃是笠詩社同仁陳千武、詹冰、林亨泰、錦連、白萩、趙天儀、李魁賢所策劃，收錄黃靈芝、錦連、白萩等64位現代詩人的108篇詩作。此書副標題「中華民國現代詩選」，一語道盡其涵容多元而廣泛的性質與色彩，舉凡當時的台灣現代詩社，例如：現代詩、藍星、南北笛、創世紀、葡萄園、笠等，皆有同仁作品入選其中。本書的出版還有另一重要意義在於，透過詩集的編選，詩人陳千武在後記〈台灣現代詩的歷史和詩人們〉一文中，提出了台灣現代詩的「兩個球根」論；他認為，要談台灣現代詩的根源，除了「一般認為促進直接性開花的根球的源流」──來自紀弦、覃子豪的中國「現代派」之外，不能忽略的「另一個源流」就是繼承過去日本殖民時代台灣詩人及其精神的本土球根。這個觀點不僅確立了「笠」日後的本土論述路線，也為七○年代中期浮現的日治時期台灣文學的出土提供一個解釋基礎。
