Introduction: Chiu Hsiu-Chun, born in Hsinchu, graduated from Shih Chien College (now Shih Chien University) with a degree in Fine Arts and Crafts, specializing in ink and watercolor. Her works focus on landscape, still life, flowers and birds. The artist is a member of the Painting and Calligraphy Committee of the Cross-Strait Cultural Arts Alliance as well as the Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese Cross-Strait Interchange Association. Chiu was invited to participate in the "Peaceful Kinmen: A Group Exhibition of 100 Chinese Porcelain Painters," which was held across Kinmen, the National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Xiamen. The exhibition was deemed a major event in Chinese painting and calligraphy in 2009. With the theme of "Peace in Kinmen," Li Wo-Yuan, the curator invited more than 100 artists from both Mainland China and Taiwan to create individual art pieces on site using porcelain plates from the only remaining official kiln in Taiwan, the Kinmen Ceramic Factory, to express Kinmen's sincerity and determination to pursue peace through the collective efforts of artists.
Chiu adopted underglaze in her works. Underglaze is a porcelain painting technique, which involves painting unfired adobe with glaze and a layer of transparent glaze before sending the adobe for firing at the kiln. The kiln should have a high temperature of over 1200 degrees. As a result, the finished product is completely porcelainized and hard in texture, with a transparent and smooth surface due to the protection of the glaze layer.
Kinmen, known as the war zone, is a strategically important place in the Taiwan Strait that has experienced numerous wars and has been devastated by relentless beacon fire. Today, the smell of smoke has faded; however, the traces of the war still testify to the past's brutality and continue to remind the world of all the efforts devoted to achieving peace today. The work presents the pride of spring plum blossoms; the crimson red of the snowy plums grabs the viewer's attention. The aquamarine moss dots are expressed, and the fresh blue-green sky epitomizes the cold air of the environment as if one can still hear the sound of the wind.
