Introduction: Chen Huo-Mu, born in the rural village of Yilan, studied painting in his early years under painter Li Mei-Shu. His exposure to numerous natures contributed to his realistic style of landscape painting.
National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the President of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-Shek. The building includes the main hall and its surrounding garden, using modern Western construction techniques and incorporating traditional Chinese architectural style. The glazed tiles and octagonal roofs reflect its oriental cultural connotations.
In the years of its creation, the Memorial Hall either had a symbol of Chinese culture or a political intent specific to the era. However, throughout the years, the theater, concert hall, and plaza in front of the Memorial Hall have become a popular place for the public as a recreational spot.
In the painting, National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is surrounded by the full bloom of plum blossoms, contributing to its unique scenery. The plum blossoms are in the upper part of the picture and constitute a more significant proportion of the composition, forming a contrasting relationship with the Memorial Hall in the distance. Strong yet clean contrast in color and shadows is evident in the whole painting. The architecture is mainly painted with flat strokes. The delicate changes in light on each color, the blurred reflections in the water, and the contrast between the overall blue with the red plum highlight the works’ harmony and the artist’s talent.
