Introduction:In April 1989, Cheng Nan-Jung, founder of the Freedom Era Weekly, set himself on fire in resistance to police arrest for his insistence on 100% freedom of speech. In May 1991, Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau deemed “Taiwan Independence Association” an illegal entity, and entered National Tsing Hua University to arrest Chen Jen-Ran, Wang Hsiu-Hui and Lin Yin-Fu and others, triggering social uproar. Moreover, the government had long implemented the Criminal Code Article 100 for White Terror and thought control, thus prompting the academic, medical, cultural communities, and pro-democracy activists to form the 100 Action Alliance, to demand for the repealing of Article 100. This picture shows protesters holding up a banner during the 520 Anti-Political Prosecution Demonstration in 1991.
