Wenxing Magazine is a cultural magazine created by Xiao Mengneng, founder of the bookseller Books World. In the early years, the purport of the magazine was "Of life, of literature, of art," focusing on art and literature. In November 1959, "recognizing that life is guided by gaining knowledge," the guiding editorial principle was changed to "Of thought, of life, of art." Between 1957 and 1961, the Art and Literature column was edited by He Fan. This position later acquired by Li Ao, which led the magazine entering its third stage. The most important event of this time was the rivalry between Chinese and Western culture in February 1962 engendered by Wenxing Magazine under the leadership of Li Ao and Cong-Meng Monthly issued by the Chinese Confucius and Mencius Association.
Starting with issue No. 58, in addition to providing introductory topics on thought, the magazine also included criticisms of current social affairs. Wenxing Magazine was shut down in late 1965 following the publication of Li Ao's essay "Our Sincere Opinion on 'National Law and Restrictions on Political Party Power.'" In all, 98 issues were published.
The style of Wenxing Magazine basically advocated new literature and the promulgation of new trends of thought. The content covered literary critiques, modern poetry, novels, biographies, travel notes, introductions to local conditions, science news, reports on arts activities and so forth; there were also reviews of the arts, such as paintings, photography, woodcarving, and music. The Chinese name of the magazine, wenxing ("literary star"), is so named because it is a literary Chinese name for the constellation Ursa Major, said to govern literature; it is also mentioned in a poem by Du Fu: "The North Wind follows the clear air;/ The Archer keeps the Great Bear at bay." The god Apollo, from Greco-Roman mythology, likewise governs poetry and music; thus ideas from both eastern and western mythology are incorporated into the title, as a declaration of dedication to literature and art.

《文星》是由文星書店創辦人蕭孟能所創辦的文化性雜誌，創刊初期所標榜的宗旨為「生活的、文學的、藝術的」，重點在於文學和藝術；1959年11月，因「認定人生是受知識指導的」，於是將編輯方針改為「思想的、生活的、藝術的」。
1957年至1961年間，「文藝欄」由何凡主編，後來改為李敖接手，因而進入刊物的第三個階段，其中最重要的就是1962年2月以李敖為首的《文星》同仁與孔孟學會發行的《孔孟月刊》所開展的中西文化論戰。
第58期開始，除現有思想啟蒙的主題外，又加入了對社會現狀的檢討，1965年底，因李敖撰寫我們對「國法黨限」的嚴正表示〉一文，致使《文星》受到停刊處分，總計發行98期。
《文星》的風格基本上以提倡新文學、傳承新思潮為主，內容涵蓋文學評論、現代詩、小說、傳記、遊記、風土民情介紹、科技快報、藝文活動報導等，亦刊載有關繪畫、攝影、木刻、音樂等藝術領域之評介報導。將刊物命名為「文星」是因為歷來傳說「文（昌）星」即是主管文運之星宿，例如杜甫詩中便有：「北風隨爽氣，南斗避文星」的句子；而希臘神話中的阿波羅，亦同樣主管詩歌、音樂，故同時兼採東西方神話之寓意，以此宣示他們準備在文學、藝術上多盡些責任的決心。
