Introduction:This watercolor painting by Cheng Hsiang-long depicts the riverbank scenery of the Tamsui River. With smooth brushstrokes, the painter delineates a scene of tourists gathering and relaxing by the Tamsui River on a holiday. The image is divided into the foreground, the middle ground, and the background. The foreground shows a crowd gathering on the riverside. Some figures have their backs towards the spectator, who are fishing with their faces towards the river. Next to the group of people is a boat in blue and red. It has tall masts, on which flags in blue and red flapping in the wind. The middle ground of the image is created with two sampan boats moored by the riverbank on the left of the image. This type of sampan boat, often painted with eye designs, were commonly used for doing trade on the Tamsui River in the early days. Today, they moor quietly by the riverside, exuding a bleak, lonely feeling. In the distant background, a few boats with gray and white sails are sailing on the horizon, seemingly merging with the cloudy sky in gray blue.
