Size description:58×84cm

Introduction:This work portrays the rugged landscape of a sea cliff cove, with cliffs on either side differing in height, creating a diagonal composition. Several visitors are shown fishing from the cliff tops, and a stone staircase leading to the bay below reveals a glimpse of the blue ocean. The artist skillfully outlines the rocks with thick ink and employs varying intensities to paint the rock surfaces, showcasing the cliffs' rough, multi-layered texture and moist appearance through rich variations in brush strokes and a bold, free-flowing style. The blue ocean is rendered with broad brush strokes, selective stippling, and white space, capturing the movement of the sea currents. Lo is dedicated to plein air ink painting of Taiwan’s landscapes, gradually evolving from traditional brushwork to a more distinct style. This painting illustrates his foundation in life drawing, transforming his master Fu Chuan-fu‘s “lie xia tsun” texture stroke technique into more complex geometric and abstract lines and planes.

Author Introduction:「Lo Cheng-hsien」-Born in Yunlin, Taiwan, Lo graduated from the Traditional Chinese Painting Division of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and later earned dual master’s degrees in fine arts and art from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, USA. Initially focused on landscape and life painting, he shifted to silk in 1981, emphasizing light and shadow. Around 1996, he began experimenting with ink painting, using simplified brushstrokes to depict terraced fields, presenting a rhythmic and abstract view of the landscape.
