Introduction:This painting is entirely created with ink and vividly captures the spirit of a horse using minimalistic expressive strokes. The horse stands sideways with its head turned to the right and front legs dramatically lifted, forming a dynamic C-shaped composition with its head and body. The artwork employs a mix of thick and thin, dense and light, dry and moist ink strokes to express the horse's movement and energy. Kao Yi-feng uses alternating light ink lines to outline the body, highlighting the play of light and shadow, while a broad stroke of light ink from the neck to the chest emphasizes muscle motion. The head is detailed with fine lines in dark ink, and the cheeks and jaw are rapidly brushed with light ink. The mane is depicted with dark ink and the flying white technique (hollow strokes done with a half-dry brush), conveying the sensation of the mane blowing in the wind. Influenced by Qi Bai-shi, Kao's style was characterized by simplified strokes that excel in portraying lively and expressive horses, and this painting exemplifies his ability to convey a majestic horse in motion with concise yet powerful brushwork.
