Introduction:This landscape work was produced by Darfar Hu using mixed media such as paper and nails. The artist depicts a scene of Daganlin in Keelung, not far from his hometown of Jiufen in Ruifang District. Using sliced pieces of beverage can and metal shards as colored blocks in the painting, he nails them to a wooden board. The composition is of a mountain scene of Daganlin with a “knick-knack peddler” walking along a mountain road and carrying a load of goods. Hu clearly depicts the local characteristics of rugged terrain, narrow roads, and cramped houses built next to the mountain walls. The peddler carries the goods on a pole over his shoulders as he makes his way along the top of the cliff. Under the cliff, viewers can see the small railway tracks used by light carts, a common scene in Ruifang and Keelung at that time. In the left bottom corner of the work, Hu replaces the signature with a long metal plate inscribed with “DARFAR HU 1998.”
