Introduction:Untitled (Alien-Play of Space) is an assemblage of 30 wooden planks of varying widths and lengths, each painted with a range of saturated colors. They are leaned and propped at various angles against a single wall. The wood planks, the wall, and the floor, which are originally individual planes, coalesce through sequential arrangement into an installation that manifests a sense of three-dimensional space, imbued with the dynamic rhythm of colors. Initially displayed in the 1984 “Play of Space” exhibition, the piece was later reproduced for the 2012 exhibition “When Spaces Become Events: Dispositif of Modernity in the 1980s, Taiwan.” Hu Kun-jung, a 1981 graduate from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), was initially influenced by geometric abstraction, Hard-edge Art, and Minimalism. He embarked on a series of experimental works around the mid-1980s, deconstructing elements of two-dimensional painting into three-dimensional artworks as a result of his exploration of flat surface and spatial dimensionality.
Author Introduction:「Hu Kun-jung」-Born in New Taipei City, Taiwan, Hu graduated from the National Academy of Arts, focusing on geometric abstraction in his early work. In 1991, he moved to France for a decade, shifting towards exploring Eastern metaphysical spirituality through geometric abstraction. His art is characterized by Hard-edge, Minimalism, and geometric forms, with clean, saturated colors and pure compositions that emphasize intuitive and spontaneous visual experiences.
