Introduction:Since the 1960s, Lee Yih-hong has utilized photography to capture natural scenes, using this “mechanical eye” to assist his memory and transform these scenes into ink landscapes with a photographic perspective and his own unique interpretation. In the “Story of Rocks” series, Lee employs abstract brushwork to construct new spatial compositions. He moves away from realistic depictions of nature and, through his personal transformation, creates a unique rhythm between black and white, dark and light. In Story of Rocks IV, Lee extracts fragments of a riverside rock landscape, arranging them in a grid of twenty-five small square paintings, each individually signed. Lee’s use of waterlines is exceptionally refined, skillfully manipulating the interplay between ink’s light and dark tones. Through the techniques of wet brush diffusion, flat brushing, and layering, the tangled chaos of free strokes or the seamless flow of continuous lines brings out the depth and shading of the rocks. The edges of the ink washes are accentuated with darker ink, where dry and wet lines intertwine, creating a rhythmic arrangement of rocks in varying sizes. These elements come alive, standing out vividly against the pure white backdrop.

Author Introduction:「Lee Yih-hong」-Born in Tainan, Taiwan, Lee graduated from the Chinese Painting Division of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. He left teaching in 1978 to focus on art. In the 1980s, his travels to Europe, North India, and Nepal inspired the “Northern Indian Journey” series. Since the 1990s, living on Taiwan’s northern coast influenced his shift from traditional ink painting to create series such as “Story of Rocks” and “Tiaoshi Coast.”
