Introduction:Lee Tze-fan was born in Hsinchu in 1907 and developed a passion for painting under the tutelage of Ishikawa Kinichiro. He went on to make an outstanding contribution to art education in Taiwan and in his spare time continued to paint, making him one of the best watercolor painters in the country. Lee often took landscapes, scenery, and everyday scenes from Taiwan as his subject matter and was particularly adept at overlapping and rubbing techniques. The work Scenery is imbued with powerfully contrasting colors that were a distinguishing feature of his later style. Although this is a watercolor work, it is also deeply imprinted with oil painting meaning. Lee switches from the use of lines to sweeping brush strokes of different lengths to craft objects and imbue them with texture and brightness. In this depiction of scenery where the brightness is broadly consistent, Lee ingeniously uses shades in several colors to clearly convey the direction of the light and a sense of space. He is also especially precise with the proportions of the scene, so viewers can feel first-hand the expanse of the water and the vastness of the view.
