Introduction:In Goodbye Little Factory: Epidermis Factory, Chen I-chun draws from childhood memories of her family’s mold-making business to reflect on the shifts in technology over time. The molding machines represent Taiwan’s economic boom during the 1980s, a period when the country was celebrated as an “OEM kingdom.” However, by the late 1990s, globalization forced manufacturing to Southeast Asia and China where labor and land rent are cheaper, precipitating an industrial transformation crisis in Taiwan and resulting in factory shutdowns and the obsolescence of equipment. Through Chen’s images, the tools that are no longer producing products underscore the plight of the displaced laborers, posing questions about their future and survival.(By Wei Chu-chiun)
