Introduction:This coastal landscape oil painting is by Yang San-lang, one of four renowned Taiwanese artists who studied painting in France during the period of Japanese rule and was selected to be shown at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. Yang specialized in landscape painting and is known for his use of highly saturated and vibrant colors, as well as powerful and thick brushstrokes. The date of the painting is unknown, but based on the unrestrained brushwork and vivid colors, it was likely painted after the war. In the foreground the surging waves crash against the coast, characterized by towering, steep cliffs. The distant sky in the background is imbued with a light-yellow hue suggesting the moment captured is around dawn. Yang excelled at coastal and sunrise motifs, and being fond of fishing and painting outdoors many of his landscape works feature seascapes at sunrise from the period of Japanese rule, a motif he continued to work with even in his later years.
