Introduction:This painting captures the appearance of the Lin Family Mansion and Garden in Banqiao before its renovation, focusing on the scene “Small Bridge Under the Moon.” The octagonal archway acts like a frame through which one can see a courtyard wall with a window and, farther in the distance, a pavilion, employing a “scene within a scene” to express depth. The architectural elements within the gate are sketched with dry brush strokes in light ink and lightly tinged with ochre, while the vegetation is painted in light green. The blurry outlines of the buildings, the mottled walls, and the overgrown grass evoke a poetic sense of old dreams fading like smoke. The foreground shrubbery is depicted with frantic, dry brush strokes mixed with bold stippling, conveying the untamed nature of the bushes. Huang Tsai-sung has painted numerous scenes of the Lin Garden, capturing the pre-renovation garden with unrestrained and desolate brushwork and infusing the scenes with poetic and nostalgic romanticism.
