Introduction:This is a watercolor landscape by Lee Quan-pui. Judging from the title and the rolling mountains in the distant background, the painter probably created his composition from the view overlooking the Linkou Plateau and the Wugu Interchange. Using vibrant colors like yellow, blue, and green, together with techniques of dry and wet washes and blending, Lee expresses a refreshing and bright suburban scenery. Different from other landscapes featuring Wugu in the past, which mostly depicted farmlands, riverbanks, and distant mountains, Lee chose the National Highway No. 1, one of the “Ten Major Construction Projects” in the 1970s, and the Wugu Interchange. In the painting, the modern highway and the redbrick low-rises in the background constitute a contrast between the old and the new.
