Introduction:This painting depicts riverbank forests with cliffs and deep valleys enveloped in clouds and mist alongside cascading waterfalls. The central diagonal valley creates a profound spatial depth, dividing the painting into upper left and lower right sections, with the focal point on the right edge. The mountains on the left side connect to the foreground in a large C-shaped composition. The lower left corner, where a misty water edge meets the right-layered cliffs, presents a balanced interplay of blank and painted spaces. Strategic placement of foreground, middle ground, and background, interspersed with clouds, flowing springs, and waterfalls, alongside the stark contrast between human figures and mountainous rocks, cultivates a sense of lofty, profound, and mysterious spatial depth. The mountains and trees are portrayed with expressive ink strokes, broadly colored with indigo and selectively accented with light ochre. Chou Chen, a disciple of Chiang Chao-shen (1925-1996), masterfully blended the brushwork of both the Northern and Southern schools in this piece, exuding a natural literary elegance that reflects the nurturing influence of Chiang's style.
