Introduction：Tsai You, born in Nantou, studied at the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) (1971-1974); the Department of Fine Arts, Chinese Culture University (1976-1978); and the Graduate School of Fine Arts, University of Tsukuba, Japan (1983-1986). Living in Japan, he developed a painting philosophy that values "life painting," influenced by his perception of the changing seasons. This work depicts an autumnal riverscape enveloped in mist, featuring trees in the center painted with a mix of dry and wet brushes in various ink intensities. The branches extend left and right towards other trees in the middle ground, linking to a small boat in the background and creating a stable composition. Tsai stated in an interview, "Though this piece does not depict a real scene, it integrates my experiences observing trees during life painting sessions." This work illustrates the artist's adept fusion of direct observational study with seasonal motifs during the early years upon returning to Taiwan, expressing the poetic essence of literati ink painting and exemplifying the continuity and innovation among the post-war second-generation local ink painters.
