Introduction:Penshui was created during Lin Chuan-chu’s preparation for his solo exhibition “Tracing Nostalgia“ (2011) upon his return to his hometown of Jinshan and Wanli. The steep and imposing mountain of Water Spring is depicted suspended against a pink-toned background, abstracting nature from reality. Lin condenses his emotions towards the land and his hometown into this tranquil landscape. The scene of Water Spring is frozen in time, with the waterfall flowing gracefully like a pure white ribbon, and mist silently lingering among the mountains. Lin’s landscape oil paintings exhibit a unique texture, without the use of traditional ink techniques like cun (texturing strokes) to express texture. He completely abandons conventional methods, yet the work contains a deep sense of scholarly elegance.
