Introduction:This painting is a half-body portrait of a short-haired young woman in a cheongsam, sitting on a chair and leaning forward with her right hand holding a mirror resting on the armrest. Her body weight is tilted to the right, creating a diagonal composition in the upper half. The young woman wears a pearl necklace and earrings, and is dressed stylishly with a poised and confident expression.
The artwork showcases the rhythmic line work typical of traditional Chinese painting, seamlessly integrating Eastern gouache into Gongbi (meticulous brush technique) figure painting. Despite its delicacy, the painting features apparent variations in thickness and intensity. Smooth ink lines outline individual strands of hair, combining thick and thin, dense and sparse lines, and filling light black color to give the hair a natural and volumetric appearance. Chen Jing-hui was skilled in depicting female characters, often representing the everyday life of Taiwanese women of his time. This painting successfully records the demeanor of a woman of the era.
