Introduction:Born in Pingtung, Dai Bih-in first studied painting with Tsai Shuei-lin and Ho Wen-chi. Later, he was accepted into the Fine Art Division of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, where he studied with Yang San-lang. After graduation, Dai pursued further education in Spain, and began focusing on paper as his primary creative theme. In this work, the artist first pressed the readymade—a round handheld fan—onto the homemade paper. Then, he freely painted, splashed, or dripped gray paint onto the work. Using different media and techniques, he expressed his own interpretation of landscape, conveying an intriguing quality that is raw and unadorned. In addition, Dai tried to overturn the function of “paper” as a mere medium to be painted on when making his works. The handmade paper holds a strong sense of presence in the constitution of the work, in which it becomes interwoven with lines and paint to co-construct an artistic concept that completes in itself.
Author Introduction:「Dai Bih-in」-Born in Pingtung, Taiwan, Dai graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. In 1975, he went to Spain for further studies, where he was influenced by artist Antoni Tàpies and reflected on the philosophy that “art should restore the simplicity of the heart.” In 1978, during the global energy crisis, he sought to redefine his artistic language by handcrafting his own paper, breaking away from traditional concepts and purposes of papermaking.
