Introduction:Chiang Jui-keng was born in Ruifang, Keelung (now part of New Taipei City). Initially, he studied sketching at Kawabata Painting School in Japan and after returning to Taiwan started working at a mine in Ruifang. In 1955, Chiang was recommended by Hung Rui-lin as a new member of the Sunday Artist's Association. In the 1960s, he was transferred to Jiufen, where he created a large body of work featuring local scenery, making him a pioneering Taiwanese painter of renowned Jiufen landscapes. This work was created after Chiang retired from the mine and returned to Jiufen, where he had lived and worked to paint from real life. Standing on the mountain overlooking the sea, Chiang portrays the factory buildings and houses built on the slopped terrain. Adopting an intuitive and direct approach, he utilizes unfettered brushstrokes and vivid colored blocks to layer the buildings and woods of the mountain town. The distant sky and Yinyang sea in the background merge into one, with the strong brushstrokes akin to rising winds and surging clouds, suggesting an impending storm.
