Introduction:Childhood by Wu Li Yu-ge captures the joyful essence of rural childhood with simple, rustic forms and subdued, bright colors. Encouraged by her son, the painter Wu Chao-hsien, Wu began her artistic journey later in life, working in various media, such as ink and color painting, watercolor, printmaking, oil painting, embroidery, and sculpture. The subjects of her paintings often draw from memories of the joyful scenes of farm work in her hometown. Her works reveal the refined beauty of forms and colors reminiscent of embroidery, with rich and abundant compositions that exude a fresh, natural charm and playful ingenuity. She stood alongside artists like Hung Tung and Lin Yuan as a significant representative of Taiwan’s Naive Art.
Author Introduction:「Wu Li Yu-ge」-Born in Fujian, China, Wu Li received her early education in a local Catholic church, having never attended formal school. However, she was highly skilled in traditional embroidery. In 1949, due to war, she moved to Taiwan with her youngest son, Wu Chao-hsien. Wu Li began her artistic journey in 1956, creating works in ink and color painting, watercolor, printmaking, oil painting, embroidery, and sculpture. Her subjects are often inspired by rural life scenes from her hometown, characterized by simple lines and warm, gentle colors. Her work reflects the aesthetic qualities of traditional embroidery, evoking a sense of innocence and childlike joy.
