Introduction:Temple of Nuwa focuses on Yilan’s Nuwa Temple as its central theme, using gauge nails as the sole medium. The piece highlights the intricate and layered architectural beauty of Taiwanese temples, capturing their unique aesthetic. Chen Chun-hao’s use of gauge nails in his artwork stems from his ongoing “Mosquito Nail Shan Shui” series, which began in 2011. In this series, he arranges gauge nails (a common woodworking material) into compositions that mimic the forms and ink-like textures of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. This approach demonstrates a blend of traditional heritage with contemporary materials. Temple of Nuwa marks Chen’s first non-replica piece using gauge nails, expanding upon his established technique of “imitating ink with gauge nails.” In this work, he shifts his focus to scenes from everyday life, transforming the familiar shapes to project imagined visions of deities, temples, and ethereal realms.
