Introduction:Yu Chin-chang began working in the mines of Xizhi as a child and became a coal digger in his youth. His personal life history is intertwined with the mining history of Xizhi, as well as memories of a childhood amid both agriculture and mining. The painting depicts the dusky glow as a farmer laden with the day’s burden makes his way home to a humble abode of thatch and brick. A plume of smoke ascends from the house’s chimney, signaling the preparation of the evening meal, ready to greet the returning toiler. Surrounding the scene is a swath of golden silver grasses and trees, alluding to autumn—the season of harvest. Under the illumination of the setting sun, the silver grasses and trees grow increasingly golden, stretching from the foreground to the distant mountains like a golden tapestry. The layered distant mountains are rendered with deep blue hues through atmospheric perspective, conveying Yu’s deep sentiments for Xizhi.
