Introduction:Rising Deer is set in an abandoned factory, where a deer drinks from a pool of water beside rusted, discarded machinery, creating a scene laden with symbolism. Lien Chien-hsing uses meticulous realism to depict the decaying landscape, juxtaposing seemingly unrelated elements to form a space where reality and fantasy converge. In terms of color, the artist employs a contrast between warm and cool tones, along with subtle highlights and shadow variations, to enhance the painting’s magical atmosphere. Lien’s work draws inspiration from his memories of the Keelung landscape, where once-thriving factories were left abandoned due to industrial shifts, turning the ruins into a distinctive feature of Taiwan’s northern coast. Through this work, Lien explores the magical and allegorical dimensions of desolate landscapes, both mourning lost memories and warning of the decline of industrial civilization. The piece also expresses a deep concern for environmental and ecological issues.

Author Introduction:「Lien Chien-hsing」-Born in Keelung, Taiwan, Lien graduated from Chinese Culture University and earned a master’s degree from Taipei National University of the Arts. In the 1980s, he focused on rural realism, depicting abandoned landscapes shaped by industrial transformation. Since the 1990s, drawing inspiration from his hometown’s north coast, Lien has created “magic desolate landscapes” by combining post-industrial decay with symbolic elements like vegetation and animals, reflecting his deep environmental concern.
