Introduction:“On the Road” is a series created by Chen Shun-chu between 1990 and 2010, capturing spontaneous moments from his travels. From 500 rolls of 35mm black-and-white film, 57 images were selected to form this landscape photography series. Without any cropping or post-processing, each photograph preserves the original exposure at the moment of capture and is presented with a narrow black border. Chen believed that carrying a camera daily created opportunities for serendipitous encounters, allowing him to collect more images. He used spare moments outside of teaching to take photographs, accumulating a body of work imbued with latent poetic energy—forming the foundation of the “On the Road” series. The core concept of this work lies in the artist’s process of reassigning meaning to two decades of memories. Through intuitive photography and curated selection, Chen explores selfhood and the past, reflecting on and rekindling his connection to personal experience and artistic impulse. From 2010 to 2011, “On the Road: Chen Shun-chu Solo Exhibition” was held at Lumenvisum in Hong Kong, Fotoaura Institute of Photography in Tainan, and IT Park in Taipei.
