      型態：獅子外觀公母有別，雄獅頸部覆有淡棕色、深棕色或是黑色的長鬃毛，顏色與睪固酮相關。

      生態：主要分布於非洲薩哈拉沙漠以南的區域，過去曾廣泛分布北非、歐洲以及西南亞，然現在這些族群除了印度一個動物保護區外皆已滅絕。獅子可以適應非常廣泛的棲地，甚至在海拔4000公尺的吉力馬札羅山區也有分布紀錄，僅熱帶雨林、薩哈拉沙漠內陸無分布。獅子主要獵食中大型有蹄動物，但從小型囓齒目到長頸鹿皆為其獵殺目標，也會搶奪其他掠食者得手的獵物。獅子可以從獵物身上獲取需要的水分，因此能夠適應較為乾旱的氣候。獅子是貓科動物中最具社會性的一員，具血緣關係的母獅會組成一個群體，雄獅群會搶奪這些母獅群的支配權，通常一個獅群組成(含

      形質：獅子體型具公母差異。野生雄獅體重138-275公斤，全長可達3.2公尺。雌獅體重85-182公斤，全長可達2.7公尺。

      標本資訊：本標本為雄獅半身剝製標本，採集自南非，頭部40.5公分。鬃毛有部分脫落。標本下方以及後方另有岩石與野草造景。
