  型態：具扁平如鴨子般的吻部，成體無牙齒，但吻部邊緣高度角質化。四肢短且有蹼，後肢有尖刺，雄性個體的尖刺含毒液。尾巴寬闊可以儲存脂肪。軀幹、四肢與尾巴覆滿深棕色毛髮。
  
  生態：為鴨嘴獸科鴨嘴獸屬下的唯一物種，屬於哺乳動物中罕見的卵生動物。僅分布於澳洲東部以及塔斯馬尼亞島。為一夫多妻制，雌獸通常於水邊挖巢穴，在裡面產下兩至三顆卵，卵約需十天孵化。雌鴨嘴獸有乳腺但沒有乳頭，因此乳汁是透過皮膚的毛孔流出。以水中的無脊椎動物為食。嘴喙以及前額毛孔有特殊的感覺器官，可用於偵測大型無脊椎動物產生的微弱電場。鴨嘴獸有雙層毛皮，可於潛水時保留空氣防止熱量散失。在一般環境以及潛水下，鴨嘴獸的體溫皆維持在攝氏32度。
