- GDESC:保育等級：International Union for Conservation of Nature紅皮書中屬瀕危(Endangered)類別。
  
  型態：台灣產唯一的熊類，特有亞種，也是台灣最大型的野生動物。體型粗壯，頭圓頸短，眼小吻短。外耳殼圓而明顯。全身披覆黑色短毛，頸部毛髮略長，下頷前端呈白色，胸前米白色V形或新月形斑紋為最大特徵。
  
  生態：雜食性，主要吃食植物的根、莖、葉和果實，也會覓食蜂巢或腐肉。除了母熊正在哺育小熊之外，多單獨行動，沒有固定棲所，也沒有冬眠跡象。過去曾廣泛分布於低至高海拔森林，但因人類活動逐漸擴展上山，現在多出沒於中低海拔人煙較少的偏遠地帶。
  
  形質：體長130到160公分，尾長10公分，體重約50到200公斤。
  
  標本資訊：本標本吻肛長166公分，乾燥保存。
