保育等級：International Union for Conservation of Nature紅皮書中屬低危物種(Least Concern)類別。
型態：臺灣森鼠，依據Wilson and Reeder（2005），分類地位隸屬囓齒目（Rodentia）鼠科（Murida）姬鼠屬（Apodemus），為臺灣特有種。體背黑褐色，腹部灰白，界線分明。
生態：主要分布於海拔1,400至3,650公尺高山地區草原及多種林相中，開墾地、避難山屋及工寮附近，亦可發現其蹤影，是臺灣產鼠類中海拔分布甚高且優勢物種。
形質：頭體長7~10公分，尾長大於頭體長，約為8~12公分，體重24~31公克。
標本資訊：資料標示1933/12/11應為採集日期，120°48'39.9"和23°30'38.1"推測應為採集地點座標資訊，經查大約位於現今嘉義縣阿里山鄉阿里山國家森林遊樂區沼平車站附近。本館藏為毛皮棍棒標本，僅存右後肢掌其餘均斷裂且未留存，頭部毛皮脫毛以小型封口袋裝。
