Orchids

Lin Chu-Yin(1966-)

Oil Painting

1998

Length:52.5 x Width:45 (cm)

Set off against a dark blue background, these snowy white orchids appear like butterflies that have alighted on verdant stalks decorated with leaves, their wings spread, ready to take flight. It is almost as if their delicate fragrance is in the air. The "four noble plants" of traditional Chinese paintings are orchids, plum blossoms, bamboo and chrysanthemums. They are the subjects of many poems, paintings and songs.
This artist made use of strong colors to portray these pure and beautiful butterfly orchids. This partially reflects the fortitude of this artist. While a street artist in Tamsui, she sometimes experienced harassment by passersby or local bullies. However, she has relied on her persistence and love of art, which has allowed her to overcome these challenges.
