Pomegranates

Hsieh Hsiao-De (1940-)

Oil Painting

1999

Length:38 x Width:45.5 (cm)

Due to its many seeds, in traditional Chinese culture the pomegranate is a symbol of blessing for many sons. This painting was completed by Hsieh at the age of 59. He is adept at surrealism and close-ups and his works are attention getting. In the front of this scene, the outer skin of the pomegranate has been peeled away to reveal the bright red seeds inside. It also partially conceals the light blue porcelain bowl. The blue cloth with yellow patterns on top of the table adds an air of sophistication to this scene.
Surrealism was used to depict the pomegranates. Based on folk tradition, this painting hints at blessings for many children and grandchildren. The three pomegranates are arranged in front and back. Those inside the bowl and the pomegranate outside the bowl provide interesting separation and spatial coexistence. They are a cultural symbol of hope for a bright future for one's children and their ability to independently raise a family.
