Yang Qian-Zhong (1925-1999)
Oil Painting
1964
Length:41 x Width:53 (cm)
This painting was completed by Yang at the age of 39. It is a depiction of his hometown during his time as a secondary school teacher. The early morning rays of light illuminate the Western-style buildings at the end of the street from the upper right corner. In the foreground, the streets on the right and left are the main commercial areas of this small town. From the Western-style buildings and electric poles, this area has undergone modernization during the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945). Along this busy street are various stalls and vendors. There are also women and children dressed in modern Western-style clothing.
Yang was an educator and painter who received modern training in the arts at National Taiwan Normal University. He was also one of the important early promoters of fine arts education in Yilan. This painting is not only an Impressionist expression of a street scene, but also a cultural asset, as this artist preserved this interpretation of the modernization of Toucheng.
