Frolicking Bird

Chen Shu-Chiao (1951)

Eastern Gouache

Length:60.5 x Width:49.5 (cm)

Under sparse cloud cover, a lively yellow bird appears to be poking fun at the unmoving stone lion sculpture. It lightly pecks at the statue's eyebrows and ears, its tail feathers in mid air, seemingly pleased with itself. The stone lion, unable to defend itself, has its mouth wide open and is depicted playing with a rolled silk ball. It almost seems lifelike, as if it will awaken and turn around at any minute. In this painting, the artist incorporated Western painting techniques, using light, shading and three-dimensional effects to make this scene appear very realistic.
