Orchid Island Dawn

Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014)

Oil Painting

1989

Length:60.5 x Width:45.5 (cm)

Orchid Island Dawn was painted by Chang in 1989, at the age of 65. The first light of day illuminates the shore, expressing radiance and hope. Reds and yellows are the main background colors. Rough lines are used to present floating clouds. The sun slowly rises in the east. Golden light shines on the beach, creating a deep and vast sense of space. In the foreground are boats and a man from the Yami (Tao) tribe, enhancing the warmth of this painting.
Orchid Island (Lanyu) is home to the indigenous Yami (Tao) tribe. The boats and loincloth-wearing fishermen of this tribe were the inspiration for this painting, which presents the unique cultural landscape of Orchid Island.
