Try Some Betel Nut

Kao Yeh-Rong(1939-)

Oil Painting

1986

Length:116.5 x Width:91 (cm)

This painting, Try Some Betel Nut, completed in 1986, features an indigenous person. This artist masterfully and realistically captured the enthusiastic smile on the subject's face. His use of colors is direct and simple and his brushstrokes are well-executed and refined. In the foreground is the subject. In the background is a large section mostly made up of sienna and dark green. Kao conscientiously created this relaxed, yet refined, scene. The viewer feels almost as if he or she is there, accepting this Paiwan's woman's kind invitation to "try some betel nut".
Kao is among a small number of painters in Taiwan who focuses on subjects related to indigenous peoples. He has carried out long-term research on the Paiwan and Rukai tribes. He was the first to discover the third-class historical monument, the Wanshan Petroglyphs. This painting can be considered a representative work.
