Along Suzhou Creek

Yang Hsing-Sheng (1938-2013)

Oil Painting

1988

Length:45 x Width:52.5 (cm)

Along Suzhou Creek was completed by Yang at the age of 50. The subjects of this painting are the houses which appear stacked like building blocks. The lighting varies among the geometrical shapes. The purplish blue sky subtly corresponds to the surface of Suzhou Creek, bringing life to otherwise deathly still buildings during the early morning.
The banks of Suzhou Creek were once famous in China. Here, the artist creates a bleak portrayal of buildings along Suzhou Creek with no people in any of the windows. Why? "Paintings are an extension of the painter's mood." From this, comes the saying that, "A painting reflects its painter."
