Chen Yin-Huei (1931)
Oil Painting
1977
Length:38 x Width:45 (cm)
This painting features a dichotomous composition. This allows the unique structural features of this bridge, located in Shiding District of New Taipei City. In the distance is an unbroken chain of mountains. There is a group of red brick buildings that seems to overlap, in their arrangement above this river gorge bridge, as they tower over the river bank. The river is extremely clear and there are boulders strewn about in the water. You can almost imagine schools of fish swimming past.
Shiding's Wanshou Bridge was completed by Chen at the age of 46. It is an early Impressionist style painting. In comparison to Chen's works in his later years, it possess somewhat abstract imagery. In this landscape painting, the artist was attentive to the depictions of natural sunlight, mountain river and buildings. Today, Shiding has become a place for tourists to sample tofu and other foods. The buildings and streets have undergone major changes. From this painting, viewers can enjoy a glimpse of this district's simpler past.
