A Corner of the Park

Shiotsuki Toho (1886-1954)

Oil Painting

1926

Length:24 x Width:33 (cm)

Shiotsuki transformed this park landscape into symbols, creating the composition and layout in combination with colors. The lines have an almost rhythmic feel, creating the contours of the trees and plants, path, pond and bench, revealing the arrival of spring. The artist did not leave behind many works from his time in Taiwan. Those that he did mainly feature indigenous peoples. This romantic oil painting, A Corner of the Park, is something very rare.
In the early years of development of Western painting in Taiwan, Japanese artist Ishikawa Kinichiro introduced English-style watercolor painting techniques. Shiotsuki Toho was also influenced by European painting styles and brought a fusion of Post-Impressionist and Fauvist styles to Taiwan. As a teacher, he sowed the seeds of Western painting and had a great influence on the styles of Taiwan's early painters.
