This painting, Quiet Afternoon, features a temple, warm sunlight, power lines, and an almost empty bulletin board. There are no people and the use of warm colors creates feelings of nostalgia and distance. During this artist's career, Taiwan has faced the issue of sovereignty over Diaoyutai and the severing of diplomatic relationships. Artists and cultural workers have begun thinking about Taiwan's best course of action. They have entered rural areas and strolled among paddies and fields, looking for subjects representative of Taiwan. They are attempting to offset the dominant Western culture and to pursue a national and cultural identity.
