North Gate

Huang Kuo-Lung (1933-1996)

Oil Painting

Length:45.5 x Width:53 (cm)

The formal name of Taipei's North Gate is Cheng En Gate. This comes from the phrase "to receive the emperor's kindness". During the Qing dynasty, local officials appointed by the imperial court entered the walled part of Taipei through the Cheng En Gate. This is the only one of the five city gates to retain its original appearance. It is also the only surviving southern Chinese-style fortified city gate in the world. Above it was once an overpass, which was torn down in February of 2016. It is surrounded by modern buildings, with its original landscape having disappeared long ago.
Under this artist's brush, the sky is blue with white clouds. Short shrubs surround this ancient red city gate. This appears to be at the height of summer. From the classic Western-style buildings and square-shaped cars, this is a cultural record from at least more than 20 years ago. It is a charming depiction of Taipei's past.
