Looking Into the Distance From the Tamsui Red Castle

Lee Tai Yuan (1949-)

Oil Painting

2001

Length:53 x Width:65.5 (cm)

The Tamsui Red Castle was constructed in 1899 as the residence of a wealthy shipping magnate. In 2000, it was restored to its former glory and was transformed into a restaurant and cafe. This is an example of the reuse of historic buildings in recent years. The red and white buildings seem to be strewn at random. The tree on the right is taller than the peak of Guanyin Mountain in the distance, which is something of interest. In the vertical view of the homes and the trees in the near distance and the horizontal view of the Tamsui River in the far distance an intriguing overlap of geometrical shapes is created. Moreover, the neat and tidy forms reveal a simple esthetic.
