There is a reserved and dignified expression on the face of the woman serving tea. She presents a bashful appearance upon meeting her husband's relatives and friends for the first time. There is gradation of warm colors characteristic of Nihonga. Fine brushwork was used to depict the pure and pleasant manner of this bride. This is a vivid portrayal of the traditional Taiwanese wedding custom of "sipping tea". The background is plain revealing the importance of the subject
Hsu depicted a diversity of subjects. In all of his works, including mountain and water scenes, landscapes, still lifes and animals, his mature technique can be seen. His elegant works feature brilliant colors and a unique style. Following World War II, he began painting portraits of beautiful women in the traditional Chinese style. His works feature clean, simple and flowing lines, making them eye-catching and worth detailed study.
