Fish Harbor

Lai Wei-Yen (1952-)

Oil Painting

1986

Length:27 x Width:39 (cm)

One vessel after another is neatly arranged along the shore. The surging waves are concealed beneath the calm surface of the blue sea. The nearly transparent blue carries the fiery spirit and burden of the men of the sea. This artist incorporated a wide angle of view, as well as colors and visual weight, to provide a natural focus on the fish harbor and boats. There seems to be a balance of power between the two sides. There is a sense of confidence that these fishing boats will not lose to the expansive ocean.
In this painting, Fish Harbor, no matter if people or landscapes, it is possible to see this artist's single-minded focus on his work. This artist is in the habit of transforming his internal thoughts into subjective forms that are rich in color. There is a Fauvist type of freestyle painting, but hidden within is a sense of religious piety.
