The Guardian Spirit Zhong Kui

Hsiung Cheng-Ching

Ink Painting

Length:129.5 x Width:66.5 (cm)

Zhong Kui is a vanquisher of ghosts and evil spirits in Chinese mythology and a Taoist deity. Although highly talented, the emperor would not grant him a position in the imperial court due to his disfigurement. He then killed himself and was made a deity, destined to forever capture evil spirits. In common folklore, he is considered to be of help to the people by removing monsters and demons, and is held in high esteem.
Although there is no lack of portraits of Zhong Kui, this one by Hsiung is a masterpiece. This portrayal of Zhong Kui and his powerful and awe-inspiring demeanor is very lifelike. His red cap and dark black facial hair increase the sense of might. His fearsome eyes and expression are enhanced by his red official's robe and large sword. All evil spirits, ghosts and monsters are afraid of this figure. The simple and elegant white background with black text emphasizes Zhong Kui's red attire and imposing manner.
